Furry/anthro/animal art challenge!

Sun Jan 27, 2008, 10:03 PM
There have been a lot of various art challenges going around, but I thought it might be a fun idea to start one that may inject some creativity and new interest into the furry/anthro art community. Far too often, we see the community saturated with wolves, foxes, big cats, rabbits, and occasionally an equine. It's time for some variety! So I thought it would be an interesting challenge to not just push myself personally, but to see if the rest of the community would like to do the same. Therefore, I've created this list of animals that have seen not nearly enough love in the fandom. While some of these may be canines, felines, etc., I tried to pick a few that are relatively unseen in the furry community.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Draw each and every one of the animals on this list. There is no time limit. It doesn't have to be in order, it doesn't even have to be anthro/humanoid. It doesn't even really have to be fully colored, it can be a pencil sketch if you'd prefer. Just give them a try. Not only will you push yourself in the process, you will learn about more of the amazing and exciting animals this world has to offer! Feel free to post this in your journal or webpage to show your progress, share it with friends, or simply use for inspiration. Some of these WILL be difficult, but you can do it! I tried not to make any of these so obscure that they wouldn't have much information or pictures of them. Some of these are also extinct, but all of them have artistic interpretations and pictures of their skeletons available on the internet or in books.

This is an awesome idea :D It's really been annoying me lately how everyone seems to enter the furry fandom and instantly make a wolf character (I've been doing so much wolf character bashing lately....I have one myself and I like them, but there are too many). There are so many awesome animals out there...
I'm so doing this :D

I am not absent minded, I am present minded....somewhere else.....

While I am not taking on the challenge (I've got my own personal challenge I am working on right now), I think this is a great idea. I was especially impressed while reading the list when I saw Styracosaurus. That just caught me off guard, but I was happy about it. I just didn't expect to see dinosaurs on the list, but why not! :) It looks like an interesting list. So, when I look for new subjects to attempt, I'll remember this list. ;)

I walk in the shadow of the sun,
But still I am alone
As only the darkness can be.
And though I walk in this world alone
Why should I stop and be lonely?

Haha, yeah, there's several extinct animals on the list (Diplodocus, Ankylosaurus, Oviraptor, Glyptodon, the thylacine, etc.) because I thought it would add some interesting variety. I tried to get a good cross section of the different animals that have existed, both past and present, with a bit more emphasis on the present because references are more easily attained for those (for obvious reasons!) :P The only animals I really avoided with this list were things like jellyfish and sponges and tunicates that really can't be anthropomorphized without an extremely large amount of effort. :P And I really didn't want to make this list more stressful than it already is! XD While it's too bad you don't have the time to do it right now (trust me, I can empathize!), I look forward to seeing what you might create if you do ever decide to give even some of it a try. :)
